I’ll just leave this comment here so y’all will have a handy place to shout obscenities at me.

My hot take: The Bob Orci Trutherism that taints Star Trek: Into Darkness, while repugnant, is kind of beside the point when discussing whether or not the movie is actually any good. V for Vendetta also has strong 9/11 Truther overtones, and is an excellent film. Only Lovers Left Alive peddles in Anti-Stratfordian nonsense, and it’s also great. The conspiracy theory themes make Into Darkness problematic for sure, but they’re not what make it completely fail as a drama (for me, anyway.)

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Ridley Scott is the closest thing we have these days to an old Hollywood studio system workhorse like Michael Curtiz. He’s undeniably great at what he does, but there are bound to be some duds due to the sheer volume of films he puts out.

Great episode, guys. I agree that this will be a fun format to return to.

I feel like there are a lot of subpar Ridley Scott movies that could be picked apart more than ALIEN, which is why I think it’s odd that that is the movie you come back to in terms of taking it down, Allen! I feel like when you come at criticizing him from that angle, a film universally revered, your points are always going to ring less true than if you looked at, say AMERICAN GANGSTER, or something.

I guess that’s sort of the point of a Hot Takes podcast, but just something I was musing on.
