Here’s the Not Very Good First Trailer And The Very Good First Still For Shane Black’s THE PREDATOR

A mediocre trailer for what will probably be a fantastic film.

Shane Black is one of my favorite filmmakers working today. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? A masterpiece. Iron Man 3? The best Marvel film. The Nice Guys? My favorite film of 2016 and one of my all-time favorite films. And that’s without getting into all of the incredible films he’s written for other filmmakers. So Shane Black’s return to the Predator franchise is easily my most anticipated film of the year. Today we got our first look and… well, see for yourself.

I think my problem here is that the trailer is poorly edited. The opening moments with the ship crash and Jacob Tremblay playing with the alien tech like it’s a toy seemingly goes on for half the trailer, yet all the moments of action are cut like they’re Michael Bay on Adderall. Not to mention that there’s minimal humor to be found in the trailer, which is what makes a Shane Black film a Shane Black film. Overall, I feel like, and hope that, this trailer is selling us a film that is wildly different from the film we can expect to see.

Which is why what has me significantly more hyped is this first still we got from Empire this morning, which features some gloriously lit Predator on soldier WWE action, which is exactly the kind of thing I desire.

Just look at that. The lightly tinted red lighting. The body slamming. The classic predator look combined with a Magic Mike worthy codpiece and fishnets attire. This is some instantly iconic stuff.

Mr. Black, I have the utmost faith in you. I regret even considering for a second, based on that trailer, that you could ever lead me astray.

The Predator is written and directed by Shane Black and stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, and Sterling K. Brown. It will be released nationwide on September 14th.
