J. Horton On: How Filmmakers Make Money on Amazon Prime

I’m J. Horton. I make movies that make money. This is how.

J. Horton is an incredibly prolific independent filmmaker and longtime friend of Lewton Bus, so when he recently started recording videos, sharing his experiences and knowledge, we knew we had to reach out to him. Here’s the first installment of what should be many!

I never had any desire whatsoever to make filmmaking how-to videos or YouTube content in general, but a few colleagues suggested that it might be a good way to promote the movies I’m making. I thought, “What the hell?” So, I made my first video. And you know what? It was really fun. Then it got a few views and some great feedback and I decided to keep going. It’s fun sharing information and helping others through some of the things I’ve had to struggle through as a completely independent filmmaker.

Which brings me to my first video. Amazon Prime seemed like a good place to start.

This Amazon Prime Filmmaking video will help you to understand how Amazon Prime works for filmmakers and how you can use it to optimize your returns (ie, make money).

It’s been a long road for me and my movies on Amazon Prime (Prime Video Direct).  I’ve been using Amazon as a distribution platform since 2010, and over twenty of my feature films are up there. Documentaries, horror, drama, family… you name it, I’ve done it. In my first video on the subject, I take you through my journey as a filmmaker and how I make money off of Amazon. Then I give a bunch of tips and tricks for you to optimize your movies as well.

Note: The information within is aimed towards feature filmmaking, not short form, non-narrative content, although a lot of what I talk about still applies.
