The Trailer for Greta Gerwig’s BARBIE Is Here and It’s a Hoot

In case you didn’t know, past Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) is heading in a bigger budget, pinker, and corporate synergy laden direction with a movie about a certain 64-year-old fashion icon. Let’s take a look.

I’m ready to be beached off by this movie. It looks doofy and funny and very, very, very pink. I’m not gonna lie, I’m mostly pumped about Ryan Gosling returning to comedy.

If you’ve seen The Nice Guys you know what I’m talking about. Gosling is as good at comedy as he is at being taciturn androids. Dude’s got range, and he’s showing it here. But this isn’t his show, it’s Margot Robbie’s.

She funny and perfect as the titular prima donna, just ready to have her hair shorn off by a little girl, and she’s backed up by a stacked cast. For fuck’s sake, Helen Mirren is narrating, and if you wanted Will Ferrell in another feature-length toy commercial I’ve got good news for you.

My major concern is the “feature-length” element.

Barbie is apparently leaving Barbieland for the “real world,” but still, can this tone carry it over the 90 minute mark without becoming grating? We’ll see this Summer. There’s a lot of talent here.
