At long last, the trailer for Dune has arrived. This version, directed by Denis Villeneuve, looks bold and intense. Everything just looks bigger, not only because of the budget but the imagination behind it. It seems like finally, someone has imagined this epic story the way it should be – enormous and ambitious.

The trailer shows us some of what we’ve seen before from character posters and other images, like a brooding Timothy Chalamet and Oscar Isaac with an impressive beard. The story is likely going to be faithful to the book, but the framing appears to be slightly different; based on the trailer (which isn’t much to go on) the story may be more overtly critical of the Atreides, possibly adopting more of a Fremen perspective than the book did. The only hint of this is Chani (Zendaya) talking about brutal outsiders, referencing the Harkonnens, but reports from the special 10-minute screening of new footage indicate that Chani also asks, “who will our next oppressors be?” as the movie shows Paul. Like I said, this isn’t much to go on but if the movie seeks to criticize the Atreides as colonizers in nicer clothes then this is the way to do it and it might rightfully give Chani a larger role. Chani is such a compelling figure in the books to me. She is not only one of the most prominent women, she is a confidante and an equal companion to Paul.

Still, a movie adaptation that modernizes Chani and other women of the book would be certainly welcome.
