I’ve only seen five of the eight Best Picture nominees (the ones I haven’t seen are Vice, Roma, and The Favourite). I think it’s gonna end up being Roma, but I’ll be pulling for BlacKkKlansman

Ryan Seacrest is shorter than I realized. Janney is 5’11 if I remember correctly and she was stooping to get in the shot. I hear Adam Lambert warming up.
Janney’s tallness was of course a recurring joke on The West Wing. All it really points to though is the thing nobody really talks about: a lot of actors are just short. Friend of the site and actor Zach Luna has said this is generally because it makes a photography director’s job easier if actor and actress are the same height.

I loved Free Solo. I have to explain why. It’s not just a stunning piece of filmmaking. It goes into the emotional heart of being outdoors and being part of nature and pushing yourself however you can. For people on the outside it looks like Honnold is making a very extreme push but the movie emphasizes over and over that it’s not the case at all. He’s not interested in dying, he’s interested in feeling as alive as possible, which is being part of nature in this specific way.
Sanni McCandless is Alex Honnold’s girlfriend. She is a big part of the documentary. We go on an emotional adventure with her.

Black Panther‘s first shot at a statue is coming up after the break in costume design, a category superhero movies should honestly dominate but practically never get nominated for. Re-creation is difficult, and something to be praised, but the “design” part is key, and genre films consistently exhibit the most creativity in that arena.

I really appreciated that Free Solo was not about thrill-seeking or even the actual technical side of climbing. There’s no thrill in almost dying, so Honnold took great steps to not approach that edge. He prepared for more than a year.
